“Oh, this? It’s laced with drugs.”

Two stills from a forgotten animation classic: Ralph Bakshi’s 1976 animated adaptation of Go Nagai’s Devilman.

Panned by critics as “borderline inscrutable” and “painfully goofy”, the feature nevertheless broke ground by not only being the first manga to be animated by a Western studio, but also having an animated film soundtrack scored by avant-garde jazz pioneer Sun Ra and his Arkestra. The master print was lost in a fire, and ongoing trans-Pacific copyright squabbles have prevented this gem from seeing any sort of wide release.
